Tips on How to Choose a DJ
We've compiled a lists of tips to help you make the best decision when choosing a DJ Service for your event. There are a number of DJ's out there to choose from – we want to make sure that we provide you with all the correct information so that you can make an informed decision!
Here are a few of the most important tips to follow:
- the DJ is experienced and professional in his or her presentation
- the DJ should provide you with a written agreement for the services to be provided that outlines all the details including on site arrive and booked playing times
- the DJ should be licensed by the music industry and only use licensed music – ask the DJ to show you the AVLA license before hiring them. This license is required by law and enforced by some banquet halls and hotels
- Choose a CDJA DJ. All members of the Canadian Disc Jockey Association are legally licensed through the association and carry their license(s) for inspection. The CDJA also has a list of standards that each member is required to meet. For a list of these standards click here
- You should also ask for referrals from clients who contracted the DJ for similar services that you are booking them for
- Check to make sure the DJ service also includes back up staff and equipment. Expect the best, but prepare for the worst!
- Cover your butt! Make sure the service is Liability insured
What can pricing mean?
A ‘big price’ doesn’t necessarily guarantee a good DJ service, but a bargain basement price generally means a poor DJ. The market for DJ’s today is so high that even a poor quality DJ can get a good fee for a night’s work. DJ equipment and licensing is expensive, so be aware of bargain DJ’s who are likely using below standard equipment and skills.
No matter what the price a good quality is still a very affordable alternative to a live band which can cost upwards to triple the cost of a professional DJ. Remember that a DJ represents you to your guests – make sure you are your DJ are on the same page.
